The Soulful Wisdom of Animals: Lessons from My Lifelong Companions

There’s a deep, ancient connection that exists between humans and animals—one that is woven into the very fabric of our souls. For as long as I can remember, I’ve felt this connection, not just to the animals that have shared my life, but also to the earth, the forest, and the wild spirit of nature. This bond has been a constant thread through my life, guiding me, teaching me, and nurturing me.

As a child, I was always surrounded by animals. I couldn’t resist rescuing any creature in need—whether it was a bird with a broken wing or a helpless hamster who needed a home. One of the most memorable rescues occurred when I saved a little chick from a boyfriend who had a plan to feed it to his pet lizard. I knew I had to step in. I dumped the boyfriend (what a lesson in priorities!) and took the chick into my care. That little chick grew into a rooster named Pookey, and he became one of the most wonderful companions I’ve ever had. I would carry him around like a baby, cradling him in my arms as he cooed gently. He was a wise, loving creature who taught me more about the depth of connection than words ever could.

Growing up, I had many animal companions—cats, hamsters, fish, lizards, and a dog. Each of them was loved equally and deeply, as they each held their own special place in my heart. These early years with animals shaped my view of the world and helped me understand that love transcends species. Every creature had its own soul, its own purpose, and every bond we shared was unique.

In 1996, after graduating from the University of Calgary, I felt an undeniable pull to the lush landscapes of British Columbia. It was a new chapter in my life, and my first mission was clear: I needed a Shiba Inu puppy and a horse. I found Shima, my first Shiba Inu, who was as wise as she was beautiful. When she looked at you, it wasn’t just with her eyes—it was with her soul. I swear, she could see right through to my heart. Shima was more than a pet; she was a teacher, and from her, I learned about deep, soulful connection.

Next came Bart, a majestic horse who became my steadfast companion. Together, we explored the wild beauty of the Rocky Mountains. Bart wasn’t just a horse; he was a partner, a fellow traveler on the path of life. The bond we shared was profound, and I will forever cherish the moments we spent riding through the mountains, feeling the wind in our faces and the power of nature beneath us.

In time, our family grew. Four more dogs joined the pack: Yoshi, Summo, Tundra, and Kona and one special cat named Zoe. Each one brought their own energy, personality, and lessons. Then came Thunder, a gorgeous paint horse, and my soul mate, Spy, a Peruvian paso horse. These animals weren’t just pets—they were my tribe, my family, and their love shaped me in ways that still reverberate today.

Sadly, all of my original pack—Shima, Yoshi, Summo, Tundra, Kona, Keiko, Zoe, Bart, and Spy—have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. But even now, I feel their presence, their love, and their support guiding me along this earthly journey. They are always with me, watching over me, reminding me of the lessons they taught me. The lessons of unconditional love, patience, presence, and the beauty of simply being.

Today, I share my life with two wonderful dogs, Michi and Koichi. They bring so much joy into my world, and every day with them is a reminder of the magic that animals offer. Their love is pure and unconditional, and they continue to teach me the deepest truths about living in the moment, embracing joy, and offering love without expectation.

Through all of my animal companions, past and present, I’ve learned that animals are not just our pets—they are advanced teachers of love. They teach us how to nurture, how to live with joy, how to be present in every moment, and how to love without condition. They show us the true meaning of compassion and patience, and they open our hearts to the divine beauty of the world around us.

I believe every animal has a soul’s purpose, just as we do. Each one enters our lives for a reason, bringing with them lessons and wisdom that we are meant to learn. Our animal companions are here to help us grow, to heal, and to connect to something greater than ourselves.

I would love to hear from you: what have your animal companions taught you? How have they touched your soul and helped you grow? Please share your stories in the comments below. Let’s celebrate the beautiful, soul connection we share with our animals.

Until next time, with love and gratitude, Rebecca.
